A Long Overdue Update
Before I begin, I want to take a minute to remember the life of my Uncle Don. He passed away suddenly while we’ve been traveling but we were lucky enough to spend a little time with him (via Skype) while we were in NY. He knew Jesus and served Him through missions work for many years. Now he knows Him even better.
Our thoughts and prayers are with family and friends continually.
Here is a run down of our trip so far (since NY). If you don’t want to read all the gory details, you can have a look at the map to see where we’ve been over the last 7000 miles.
So here is a quick…or not so quick…rundown.
We said goodbye to my parents and New York on June 1st with our next destination Ironwood Michigan. Because we are on a tight budget I contacted a few church camps asking if it would be possible for us to stay on the way through. One church answered back in time and said they were happy for us to stay for the night so we arrived at our first Michigan stop at dinner time to an empty campground. It was our first night alone as a family in quite some time so was lovely to take a walk through the empty fields on our own…the kids free to run without disturbing anyone. Our second camping spot on Lake Michigan
The next day we made it to the Upper Peninsula and found a camping spot on Lake Michigan, which was an amazing spot despite the freezing temperatures.
The next day we headed to Ironwood where we were given hospitality by the relatives of a friend on a small lake where we had the opportunity to go kayaking, fishing for trout and rides on quad bikes. Our original intention was to stay only for a few days with Matt speaking at the Ironwood AOG on Wednesday night. But as we have come to see on this trip, God is only seeing fit to give us a few days (if we are lucky) in advanced of having planned what we are going to do.
We wanted to stay till Sunday, but didn’t want to impose on our generous hosts, who then came home and said “we’ve had a family meeting and we think you should stay the weekend”. So that settled that. We had an amazing time with the church and the family we stayed with before heading off Monday morning to stay with another part of the same family near Minneapolis before continuing to see friends in Omaha who I hadn’t seen in WAY too long.
Again, we didn’t have solid plans, and after our car ‘dropped it’s guts’ as Matt said and he had to spend a few days being a mechanic, we decided to stay for the weekend there and also made the decision that it would be unwise for us to continue up to Alaska and instead do a bit in Canada before heading back down the west coast.Exploring the Omaha Zoo aquarium
We had a great time exploring the Omaha zoo while we were there and the kids enjoyed having the opportunity to spend a few days playing with our friends 3 kids before we headed off once again.
From Omaha we decided to head up to the Badlands National Park in South Dakota where we spent a couple of days.Badlands National Park
The second day we had record high temperatures followed at dinner time by a big storm that passed right overhead sending everyone running for cover with a couple of very close lightning strikes which was then followed by a night of massive winds that deprived us of sleep as we waited for the camper to tip over. Luckily it didn’t and we headed off for Wyoming and Grand Teton national park.
That will do for now…more to come.
